Mount Merbabu via the Suwanting trail is one of the most challenging and beautiful routes to conquer the summit of Merbabu. Located in Dusun Suwanting, Banyuroto Village, Magelang Regency, this route is known for its steep terrain and breathtaking views.
Challenging Trail
The trail is quite steep from the start—perfect for hikers who enjoy a good challenge. It climbs continuously with very few flat sections, so be prepared mentally and physically.
Suwanting Savanna
The main highlight! This route passes through vast, stunning green savanna fields. During the rainy season, the grass is fresh and misty—it feels like hiking in a fantasy world.
Legendary Sunrise Spot
From the savanna, you can catch the sunrise with a backdrop of Mount Merapi, Sindoro, Sumbing, and even sometimes Mount Lawu—ideal for landscape photography lovers.
Less Crowded, More Peaceful
Compared to other trails like Selo or Wekas, Suwanting is less trafficked, which means a quieter, cleaner, and more personal hiking experience.
Kenteng Songo Summit
Like other routes, the final destination is still the Kenteng Songo Peak—the highest point of Mount Merbabu. The fatigue disappears with the incredible 360-degree panorama.
Mount Prau via Patak Banteng is the most popular and fastest route to reach the summit of Mount Prau, located in the Dieng Plateau, Central Java. This trail is a favorite among beginners and experienced hikers due to its easy access, short duration, and stunning scenery.
Golden Sunrise Spot
The summit is known for having the best sunrise in Central Java, with views of Mount Sindoro, Sumbing, Merbabu, Merapi, and Slamet.
If you’re lucky, you’ll see a sea of clouds that wipes away all your tiredness.
Camping at the Summit
The wide summit area is ideal for setting up tents, surrounded by vast grasslands.
Temperatures can drop to 5°C or even lower during the dry season.
Daisy Flowers and Frost
During certain seasons, the summit area is covered with wild daisies.
In the dry season, frost (known locally as embun upas) sometimes appears, giving a snowy vibe.
A lot of people know that the view from Mount Merbabu is superb—so why not do both Mount Merbabu and Mount Prau in one trip?
