On the Indonesian island of Java, in the province of Central Java, is the dormant stratovolcano known as Mount Merbabu. The Javanese terms Meru, which means “mountain,” and awu or abu, which means “ash,” can be combined to form the name Merbabu, which can be loosely translated as “Mountain of Ash.”
The settlement of Salatiga is situated in its northern foothills, just south-east of the nearby Mount Merapi, an active volcano. Between Merbabu and Merapi, where the settlement of Selo, Java, and exceptionally productive farming area are located, is a 1,500m-high broad saddle.
